October 7, Providence – Governor Raimondo: Never Again is Now
For almost a year, AMOR and other community groups have called for #ShutDownWyatt, and Governor Raimondo has not joined the call. Even after Jewish protesters were attacked by prison guards, the Governor has refused to publicly call for the facility to be closed and private prisons banned in RI. Next week, Jews commemorate Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, where we ask forgiveness for the sins of our past year and our fates are sealed in the Book of Life. We are gathering on Monday to collectively remember those whose lives have been lost to ICE and the detention machine, here in Rhode Island and beyond, and to atone for our inaction. We are inviting Governor Raimondo and other leaders in our state to join us in atoning for our collective inaction, and publicly call for shutting down the Wyatt and banning private prisons, releasing people detained by ICE, and banning local and state collaboration with ICE. On Monday, October 7th we will be gathering together right in the Governor’s neighborhood to perform Yizkor, the Jewish Memorial Prayer recited on Yom Kippur, and light yahrzeit candles – candles used to remember the dead in Jewish tradition – to remind Governor Raimondo of the migrants who have been killed in this War on Immigrants and to invite the Governor once more to join us in saying Never Again Is Now. People of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to join Never Again Action RI and AMOR to collectively commit to action for immigrant justice, and to call on our elected officials to join us in this coming year. Meet outside of Temple Emanu-El, 99 Taft Ave. Providence, at 5:30pm this Monday, October 7th.
