On this day, 21 December 1892 left wing journalist and suffragist Rebecca West was born. She helped found the feminist journal The Freewoman, which caused a scandal when it was launched, particularly due to West’s article advocating free love, in which she stated “Marriage had certain commercial advantages. By it the man secures the exclusive right to the woman’s body and by it, the woman binds the man to support her during the rest of her life… a more disgraceful bargain was never struck.” She later supported the fight against the fascists in the Spanish civil war and worked with Emma Goldman to establish the Committee to Aid Homeless Spanish Women and Children.
