May 9 – Oxford Opposes Katie Hopkins
Far right commentator Katie Hopkins has been invited to speak at the Oxford Union. This is a woman whose hateful views, including comments directed at refugees, migrants, Jews, Muslims, the mentally ill and the LGBTQ+ community have led to her being fired from LBC Radio. Last year, she was detained in South Africa on the charge of spreading racial hatred. Amongst her countless disgusting comments, In 2015, Hopkins wrote in a column for the Sun about refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean to safety, “Rescue boats? I’d use gunships to stop migrants.” And “make no mistake, these migrants are like cockroaches.” The Oxford Union has repeatedly hosted far-right speakers, including Nick Griffin, Tommy Robinson, Marine Le Pen, Steve Bannon and, last term, Marion Marechal Le Pen. We refuse to allow the Oxford Union to use the worldwide rise of fascist and racist movements to raise their own profiles and further their careers by courting controversy and lending respectability to racist and fascist ideologues. Let’s show our strong and united opposition and send send a clear message that Hopkins and her views are not, and will never be, welcome in our city.
