June 25 – Patriarchy Kills! PDX Says NO to Misogynist Jordan Peterson!
Jordan Peterson is a psychology professor who has gained a substantial following via his “self help” swindling, an amalgamation of conspiracy theory, entitled whining, and misogyny. MRA ideology has proven a powerful recruiting tool for the Alt Right and Peterson is a major figure in this cultural war. Peterson has amassed a fan base of angry white men by punching downward at vulnerable populations and now has even earned himself a place of honor among the most violent margins of the MRA movement, Incels.
Peterson has voiced support for Alek Minassian, who was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder in a terrorist action motivated by the profound misogyny of Incel ideology.
Dehumanizing rhetoric about trans people and women may not set off the same alarm bells as open white nationalism but in fact this hate-filled ideology has a real impact in the world and a cost in human lives. While extreme acts of patriarchal violence like Minassian’s are motivation enough for people to take this issue seriously, daily violence against women and people on the trans spectrum is an ongoing, pervasive plague in our society which creates a less visible though far larger body count.
We will not sit by and allow someone to advocate and inspire such acts of violence in our city! Come out and lend your voice and body to this action to stand in solidarity with/as women, trans people, and all gender minorities!
