Migrants coming to Greece from Asia and Africa are under violent attack by organised groups of fascists, police and the State. The crisis at Greece’s border with Turkey is the most recent development in years of racist persecution of migrants. The state has increased border control to the maximum level and Prime Minister Mitsotakis has changed the asylum laws. The right to apply for asylum has been illegally revoked for a month. This new policy is completely illegal as it violates the Geneva Convention, but neither Mitsotakis nor any EU politician has commented with any justification for this gross violation of fundamental human rights. Anyone caught entering the country illegally or without papers will be stuck in bureaucratic limbo, their very existence made illegal.

The new measures are in response to Erdogan’s decision to ‘open’ the border with Greece. No one thinks that this change in policy was due to any sympathy with the millions of refugees in Turkey. It is a cynical attempt to put pressure on the EU to support Turkey’s role in the conflict in Syria. Turkey has a 6 billion euro deal with the EU to control migrants and prevent them from travelling onwards to Europe.

The situation for migrants coming to Greece from Asia and Africa was already terrible and violence against them is now escalating. Organised groups of armed fascists block the entrance to camps. Locals stop boats from docking at the island of Lesbos. The Greek coastguard fires shots at dinghies in attempts to push them back.

Black and brown children are drowned at sea within sight of the shore.
A Syrian man was shot dead with rubber bullets at the border.

The price of freedom is too high.

The free neighbourhood of Exarcheia is under increasingly aggressive militarised police occupation. Random arrests and buildings, harassment of women and the targeted dissection of an idea through the eviction of squats, targeting of anarchists and constant patrols have become the new normal. Exarcheia is a symbol of freedom and a safe place for the illegal, the undocumented and the illegal. This is an attack on our way of life.

We demand justice for the victims of police brutality and racism.
The police will be held accountable for their violence.

We call on antifascists, and everyone across London to join us in expressing our solidarity with migrants, anarchists and those struggling against repression from the state and white supremacy, against the EU border regime and fascism in all its ugly forms.

We call on you to join us in expressing our rage at the Greek state and police for their openly and unapologetically fascist policies.
