The Uprising Continues is an antifascist festival organized since 2015. Its name is inspired by the Slovak National Uprising, whose anniversary we commemorate every year.
On August 29, 1944 general Ján Golian issued a coded instruction reading “Begin the eviction”, which set off a large-scale antifascist mobolization that resulted in a two-months armed resistance against the tyrannical regime of the Slovak State and fascist oppressors. The SNP has, thus, become one of the few instances when the people of Slovakia stood up for democratic values.
75 years later, fascist are back in the Slovak parliament. They parade the trains with their broad-shouldered anti-Roma vigilantes, display Hilnka Guards-inspired flags at their car convoys and have broadened their list of enemies to include not just Jews and the Roma, but also non-heterosexual people, refugees, NGOs and social movements. The message of our festival is clear: The struggle against fascism must continue.
Unlike senior politicians, who commemorate this anniversary by laying wreaths by memorials or reading speaches written by their assisstants, our festival invites you to the streets. It invites people to occupy the public space, to have fun, to be creative, to think and to focus their attention on the wider context of today’s problems instead of just patting themselves nostalgicly on the backs.
